The props were loaded, the checklist was double checked, the luggage was safely stored and vroom vroom, Spec Theatre and Sid: The Handsome Bum were on our way to catch a ferry to Victoria, to perform at the Victoria Fringe Festival 2015.
Quick check in and drop off at our lovely Air BnB host Rehan’s house out in beautiful Saanich and we were already heading Downtown to take in and participate in the first event of the Fringe, the Fringe Preview in Centennial Square. Locally made donuts and ice cream and poutine? It didn’t take a lot of edible convincing that this was the place to be.
We quickly signed in at Homebase for the Fringe, put up some posters at the Intrepid Theatre office and scurried down to the square to partake in some free pizza noshing and some free beer sloshing (or lovely crisp, locally made cider). The Fringe Preview is an opportunity for the shows to give the public a glimpse at their pieces, a two minute sales pitch to lure potential audience members in. We were late on the docket, going on at around 8pm, which gave us a lot of time to hand out tons of fliers, meet with other Fringe artists and get a feel of how this whole shabang works. A lot sooner than later, our spot was up and the Fringe got two minutes of Sid (and a bit of Jesse, the stage manager). Sid, lover of people of ages and sizes, spun a few tales, before leaving, possibility towards the free pizza table. The night ended with a dance party, with music provided by North Vancouver’s amazing eclectic, experimental, pop rockers The Tourist Company.
If this is just a sampling of things to come, we are super duper excited for tomorrow, the next day, the next day and so on of MORE FRINGE!
